The first step is to avoid the foods that are causing you problems.
That means eating plenty of vegetables, nuts and fruits.
Eating more protein and whole grains is also good.
And drinking plenty of water is important too.
“I’ve found that the best way to help reduce the amount of sugar in our diet is to limit our intake of sweets,” Dr Cian Breen, a dietitian at St Thomas’ Hospital, told the Irish Times.
“You’re not going to get sugar from these things, but you will feel fuller.”
So how do you do this?
“Drink less, take your vitamins more seriously and use your willpower,” Dr Breen said.
“If you’re a person who’s been eating well, you can be a bit less frugal, but still have a decent diet.”
I would advise you to keep the weight down with healthy, high quality foods,” Dr Peter Gormley, a nutritionist at the Mayo Clinic, told The Irish News. “
I’m not going into a detailed advice on what to eat and how to eat, but I would suggest making sure that you’re eating the right foods, including nuts, seeds, fruit and vegetables.”
“I would advise you to keep the weight down with healthy, high quality foods,” Dr Peter Gormley, a nutritionist at the Mayo Clinic, told The Irish News.
“It’s good to eat more fibre, it’s good for your joints and you’re not burning any fat, so it’s a good way to keep yourself healthy.”
The latest scientific evidence shows that it’s not the sugar in the food you’re after, but the food itself that is the problem, not the people consuming it, that’s to blame for the excess sugar.
It’s a question of how much you want to consume, but Dr Gormray said you should be able to choose what you do with the excess calories.
“There are a lot of different ways you can get into excess calories,” he said.
“Some people find that they need to eat a lot to lose weight, some people find they need a lot in order to stay slim, and some people just find they don’t need that much energy, so they just eat whatever is convenient.”
Dr Gormay added that it was important to eat foods that you love.
“The best way of keeping your weight down is to eat good quality food, especially healthy, wholesome food, so eating more fruit and nuts and seeds and a lot more vegetables is good.”
